Although Indonesia is a great place to find vegetarian food with lots of soy options and side dishes of vegetables available in the near warung , its cities were late with their source varieties of ethical organic food. In Jakarta, most consumers prefer cheap tasty meal without considering broader impacts of their food on their health and the environment (unsustainable monocultural farming methods have had an enormous impact across Borneo and Sumatra, resulting in large-scale deforestation). Many restaurants use palm oil, genetically modified vegetables and diabolical taste enhancer, MSG. But a growing number of individuals are increasingly concerned about their food and set up the joints that support, local organic farmers, providing warm, vegetarian meals for consumers across Indonesia. Here is a selection of five vegetarian restaurants in Bali, Jakarta and Yogyakarta.

Open last year by a group of young entrepreneurs concerned about the environment, a vegetarian burger joint has bloomed - marking the first on TripAdvisor for the best restaurant in Jakarta. The social atmosphere of the place is further encouraged by the Burgreens team are actively involved in promoting healthy, sustainable lifestyles by visiting the bio fairs and events, including Green Organic Expo and Health in Jakarta. They also have plans to start meditation courses with Reza Gunawan, the husband of the writer Dewi Lestari and produce a small variety of vegetables in their backyard.
Founded by Max and Helga Mandias Angelina, I recently visited their restaurant and was invited to try a selection of three mini burgers with beans, mushrooms and spinach chickpeas fillings. Prices are worth it - this restaurant is changing the way consumers think about their food Jakarta. Sustainably-focused and locally sourced, Burgreens offer oat milk, noodles zucchini, raw cocoa balls and sweet potato fries and useful menu describes the first options, vegan and gluten free.
