Leonardo Da Vinci, Galileo and Copernicus can be the first names that come to mind at the mention of the "Renaissance man" or "polymath" . Add Asians in the list and you'll probably think of Avicenna, Su Song, and Rabindranath Tagore. If Indonesians currently living deserve to be on this list, I would immediately appoint Harry Darsono.
There was only 9:00 on Saturday morning. Part of 15 had already assembled in the hall of this three-storey house with a manicured garden in Cilandak, eager to see a beautiful collection of high fashion and art-to-wear - as well as paintings, porcelain, homeware and artisan pianos - in the company of their creator
.Harry Darsono is not your typical fashion designer. Not only this Spry Surabaya-born 63-year-dressed Princess Diana and Queen Rania - being a musician, painter, sculptor, architect, university professor, business consultant, multi-linguist and philanthropist equally talented and passionate, it is difficult to put a label on Darsono.
But long before Darsono was recognized as an estimated genius, young Harry had to overcome its share of adversity. "I had to be interrupted because my mother conceived me just after my sister, and my mother was physically weak," said Darsono, the fifth of eight children. "It was 1950, after the war. Abortion has failed, then my father came in and said, 'Please stop. So I was born prematurely at seven months. "
As a child, Darsono had frequent seizures, but was physically very active. Due to high alkaline levels in the body, it sleeps two and a half hours night. sensory neurotransmitters hypersensitive constantly caused Darsono mental overload that caused him to talk about the difficulties well in thirty years.
at home, he vandalizing things and drew storyboards with sadistic scenarios. people at that time did not know what ADHD (hyperactivity disorder attention deficit) was Darsono and simply rejected as a child in trouble and perverted.
because of its aggressive tendencies and destructive, Darsono's parents sent him to live with his grandmother in Mojokerto and attend the local Adventist school seventh day. at nine Darsono got expelled from six schools and ended up in a special school for the deaf and dumb.
At the end of the year, uncle psychiatrist, Dr. R. M. Soedjono asked if he could take young Harry in France, where he was conducting research on ADHD therapy. In the outskirts of Paris, Soedjono rented a house that served as his laboratory for homeschooling seven children with ADHD.
In this lab home Darsono learned to play the piano, the harp, and gamelan. But one thing can calm overactive Darsono; pulling long hair soft, blond of his French therapist. One day, the therapist gave Darsono silk cocoons instead.
"My eyes blink for four minutes," recalled Darsono. "She taught me to draw and I am surprised that the soft fibers do not break." Since then, silk cocoons spun yarn by hand became Darsono therapy to achieve focus.
The son were then dyed in different colors and connected to the needles. Darsono their embroidered in large three-dimensional images. The first bird embroidery nine years Harry is now framed in the museum, rich in color and texture, as if made by an experienced artist.
Later Darsono learned to make silk fabrics, hand-painted and haute couture. With the encouragement of his mother, who wanted her children to learn and appreciate the wealth "adversity quotient" Darsono secretly sold his works.
As a young adult, Darsono was admitted to the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where he studied six majors to channel his excess energy: painting, sculpture, sculpture embossed, high fashion, textile arts and costumes. Darsono graduated in 1979 and moved to Geneva to work for the World Gold Council.
He also spent much of the 1970s and 1980s are costumes for Shakespeare productions in the UK, France, Greece, and the Soviet Union, including Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Othello, Midsummer night's dream, and a contemporary kabuki version of Romeo and Juliet.
"theater producers tell me why the costumes to the fine hand if the audience can not see the details of the house? But the hand is therapy for me, "said Darsono, whose haute couture costumes are worn mainly by the main stakeholders for a period of 16 to 18 years.
Darsono met Diana Spencer at the end of 1970s before becoming a kindergarten teacher. Darsono British godmother, Jane Phillipson, is the brother-sister of Dame Barbara Cartland, the novelist and step-mother of the would-be-Princess. After the marriage of Diana in the British royal family, Darsono began making his silk dresses inspired by wayang Javanese. the Princess has since put some of her dresses at auction to raise money for his AIDS charity program, which Darsono would buy "for a fortune. "
a sapphire ring Darsono made to the Princess of Wales is on display in the museum during tours handle them carefully with latex gloves. - an insurance requirement - it actually allows visitors wear them
.Another royal Darsono is dressed Rania of Jordan, to whom he made a low hand sewn necklined red dress with gold sequins and a long black skirt. On the occasion where this dress was worn, Darsono performed a Balinese dance in front of the royal family, dressed in a traditional costume of leather, he hand-carved.
Darsono past the mid 1980s pursuing a doctorate in psychology at Christchurch College, Oxford. For his thesis, he studied humanistic philosophy in classical literature from various cultures, including the Mahabharata and the works of Shakespeare.
"My father wanted one of his children to become a teacher, like his brother, the professor Suyunus" said Darsono. This uncle is a professor of neurology at Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya. "None of my siblings were ready to go this route because they were more interested in becoming businessmen. So I studied until I got my doctorate. I still use sign language at the time. "
Before he learned to speak early thirties, Darsono used to communicate using quick sketches, sign language and unintelligible sounds. And yet, at this moment, already includes Darsono Dutch, Chinese, English, french, Indonesian and Javanese. Darsono also has an apprenticeship program for youth with special needs. The Foundation recently partnered with the Lions Club of Jakarta Nusantara and Siloam Hospitals in a musical fashion show to raise money for patients who need corneal surgery.
"Do not judge your child on the basis of what they are now, as they will be very different people thirty years from now," said Darsono. "Be thankful if you have a child with special needs, because the child comes with special gifts and God will give you what it takes to dig them up."
