I remember the friends and family with small children regularly consulting their well-worn copy of baby care and child by Dr. Benjamin Spock, d first released in 1946 and selling over 50 million copies.

A similar book was first published in 1911 called Wenken in Raadgevingen betreffende het Gebruik van Indische Planten, Vruchten, enz. (Advice and suggestions for the use of plants, fruits, etc. from the Dutch East Indies) and was written by J. Kloppenburg-Versteegh. It was specifically designed to provide a DIY approach to family health care. The families, that is, that would not have reliable access to skilled medical care. The book is accompanied by an atlas containing 131 drawings of medicinal plants mentioned in the book.

Giant Legetan In those days, it was said, sick child, check it out in Kloppenburg, which included the following steps. First, it was necessary to check the disease and symptoms of Part 2 of the book, from which one was referred to the requirements; Part 1, botany section describes the plants needed to prepare the prescription, and the Atlas, clarification, provided illustrations of certain plants and herbs used for healing. Sounds easy, but it was not, as the preparation required a lot of dedication, precision and hard work. Chew the heads of giant legetan (Spilanthes oleracea, Jacq.) To soothe a toothache was, except get the plant, pretty easy.

But the preparation of other drugs was not.
The book was, however, widely used and an absolute necessity because suitable alternatives are not available, or low-quality concern.

The author has lost a daughter to typhoid fever. On the advice of the 'doctor' assistant, she was, however, treated for malaria. The practitioner was later exposed as a charlatan. This experience and the awareness that medical care was in such a dire state, Kloppenburg has decided to deepen his knowledge of herbal remedies, turn his hobby into a profession and put it on the paper more wide dissemination of its benefits.

When reading through the tips and suggestions, it becomes clear that the stomach and intestinal disorders has been one of the major problems facing the people of the Netherlands East Indies, Indonesia then yet known. Nearly a quarter of Part 2 is devoted to this disorder.

Sambiloto Surprisingly, a few paragraphs discuss preventive measures. There is nothing to boiling drinking water and washing hands. The spread of germs and contamination was to some extent known officials have been accused of being the main source of skin diseases and eczema, and a warning was sounded for not having the a laundry whitener to the outside in case of typhoid and cholera.

And as we might have been expected, there is nothing on current hot topics such as breast tumors, cancer, cholesterol, prostate and ED. But an interesting entry is appendicitis.

Rather than advise an operation and hospitalization,   rest and liquid food is described only in conjunction with a drug derived from the leaves of Sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata, Nees): 20 sheets of being crushed in a mortar with a firing glass of water, strain through a cloth and the liquid drink daily.

These non-surgical advice is probably due to the time the lack of hospitals and surgeons, and poor medical care in general.

It should be emphasized that Batavia, in the time of Ms. Kloppenburg, was a place where marshes, ponds and canals clogged with all kinds of garbage and dead animals, creating such pestilence and toxic miasma vile, becoming known as the Eastern Cemetery.

Nowadays, most of the old canals have been filled. 13 rivers in Jakarta, many canals and thousands of drains, however, remain blocked, but now with plastic bags, styrofoam and anything Jakartans-and that includes you and I-tend to throw.

It all washes into rivers ... There are some years when a flood prevention study in Jakarta, it was found that the cleaning and dredging of rivers, canals and drains reduce flooding by 60%.

Anyway, compared to Kloppenburg we are much better era, really, much better. If your child is sick, there is no need to concoct your own remedy, there are many good pediatricians, and general health care :. SOS Medika, Global Doctors and many other clinics and GPs

But do not forget to take your vitamins!
