Vanessa Campagnaro does not so much walk into a room rather to a key 6 feet 1 inches, it lopes. Followed closely behind her is Selenia Rebeiro, its partner in the highly successful Sanur Jewellery Studio. These two women from very different backgrounds, have made their quest to bring the production of silver jewelry to anyone willing to learn the trade.
What often makes a partnership work is when the chemistry is opposed to a spectrum, and they are the evidence of what brought them alive. Vanessa is an Englishwoman who, by his own admission, has always had "metal in his blood." Born in a manufacturing family who invented the famous Aga wood stove, one can appreciate the attraction of the metal, any type of metal, was always going to dominate his life. the world was at an early age, the oyster as she lived and worked all over the world. Growing up in Ontario, Canada, she had a clear vision of what it wanted to and pursued with a passion that still seems to course through his blood now.
his introduction to the design and manufacture began while Cheltham Art College followed by a diploma from the University of East London. from there, the world of fashion and sign jewelry, which led to stints with Burberry in Tokyo, followed by time in New York and California, where she studied under designer Nancy renowned jewelry Shappelle.
backgroundSelenia is equally colorful. Born in Angola of Portuguese origin, she became a wanderer by trade at an early age. The beginning of the war in Angola meant the family had to move to the UK where she graduated. Once she graduated, she took the road less traveled and by chance on the jewelry market in full swing Kathmandu.
Defying the wind, it apprentice in a master craftsman in a small factory in the heart of the money market. He was here in the back streets, she learned his trade, the study of complex designs and manufacturing techniques with the method of shaping metal by developed and elegant secular pieces. His thirst for knowledge then took him to Rajasthan in India to learn the art of making precious stones where artisans use old methods that have existed for centuries. Even today, she uses a torch powered by pedals to fill the bellows!
It is obvious that at some point the paths of these two incredible women inevitably cross and he was on the island of Bali, where their talents and personalities respected front. From their first meeting, they knew that their philosophies about their craft were on the same path; it was a meeting of minds. However, it was their irresistible desire to teach that basically cemented the link and have not looked back since the beginning of their business there nearly four years.
When asked about their philosophy and desire to teach, their answers were similar. Selenia thought about the question for a while before replying, "I am confident that the knowledge given to me was meant to be shared. I was given this gift of jewelry design and manufacturing and so the teaching is my way to share my gift with others "
Vanessa replied." I believe that creativity stems from an organized and peaceful space. For us, knowing one day in our studio can be a choice between a more creative life for the future or a sudden driving force behind a career for one of our students told us that we're doing something here. "
These strong and independent women know the path they wish to travel and are more than willing to share their vision in empowering other women. Apart from their business, both Vanessa and Selenia were heavily involved in the establishment of Sanur Springboard where they devoted their time to teaching the local population of young women the power of design. in essence, the dominant view was to try to teach participants want a "trade" so that it might lead to future employment opportunities.
He was the involvement of this group that was the platform for the formation of Sanur Jewellery Studio . Vanessa and her partner Mark have turned what was a rather dilapidated residence in a beautiful house with a large jewelry workshop operation. the teaching studio is a structure of the barn as light and airy painted bright white. The workstations are all facing forward and are filled with all the tools of the trade to create what will be their own masterpiece.
Both Selenia and Vanessa introduce new students to the design process where each individual is encouraged to create a layout on paper and led through the process to bring their masterpieces to life. The studio itself attracts locals and tourists, as even those without knowledge of jewelry design process can, and produce a valuable piece that has its own stamp on it. Couples from around the world who intend to get married in Bali come to the studio to design and make their wedding rings in a single day. This is somewhat of a special way to start their lives together.
The classes begin with an in-depth discussion on the history and the complex nature of money and its unique properties. I'm told that the best money from Mexico, but most of the money used in the studio comes from the island of Sumatra. Demonstrations detail how the metal behaves when heated and covers areas such as how a manufacturer can put "spring" into the metal to make it more flexible.
The two women tell me the satisfaction they receive at the end of a day when students proudly wear their own creations, be it a ring, bracelet or pair of earrings finely designed. There are some rather personal thing to have a room that has evolved from his own imagination and bring it to the end. The studio takes and teaches local apprentices, both as women maintain their is not a pleasure to own, but rather something to pass on to those who are ready to learn.
